Finding a managed service provider in Tampa Bay is not hard. Throw a rock down US-19 and you will hit three of them. Finding one that actually picks up the phone when something breaks? That is a different story.
After two decades in this industry, here is what I tell every business owner who asks me how to evaluate an MSP.
Not what is your after-hours process. Who, specifically, picks up? If the answer involves a call center, a ticket portal, or our on-call team, that means the person fixing your problem has never seen your network before.
The right answer is a name. Ideally, the same name as the person who built your network.
Real monitoring means someone is watching your endpoints, firewalls, and backups around the clock and acting on alerts before you even know there is a problem. A lot of MSPs sell 24/7 monitoring but what they really have is automated alerts that go to an inbox nobody checks until Monday.
Ask to see their monitoring dashboard. If they cannot show you one, walk away.
In 2026, endpoint protection is not optional. Your MSP should be running enterprise-grade EDR on every device, managing your firewall rules actively, and verifying backups actually work.
Long-term contracts protect the MSP, not you. The best MSPs work month to month because they are confident you will stay.
Before you sign anything, call them with a question. See how long it takes to get a real human. That experience is what your employees will have every single day.
